My Friend Comes with Eye Strain
Seeing the kids glued to the computer really annoys me.  I almost always try to get them away, try to persuade them that outdoor activity is much healthier and tell them how bad staring at the computer is for their eyes.

“A few more minutes, please,” they beg.

One rainy afternoon I had little to do.  I thought I would experiment with the PC a little as there was no way I could potter around in the garden or go for a stroll.  I turned the computer screen on and a little man started jumping about all over the screen.

Out of curiosity I clicked on the little man and all of a sudden the whole screen was filled with attractive pictures and the little man at the corner was waiting for my instructions to start his journey.  Ah!... the little man was called Mario!
By pressing a few keys I managed to figure out that the arrow keys made him move up, down, left and right and I could even make him jump up and down!

This was fun. I had to get him through different obstacles and there were changes of scenery every now and then.  Mario was rewarded with more strength if I did one thing, and lost strength when I did some crazy other thing.
I didn’t realize how long I had been playing with this little man until I heard the thud on the door…the kids had arrived.  I quickly shut down the computer and greeted them as usual.

I felt almost guilty.  And knowing these kids, I almost feared they would realize that I had been playing while they were away.

For some reason I did not shout at them as usual when they spent time in front of the computer. Instead I just glanced whenever I could hoping to gather a few tips for the next time I sat there.
I was looking forward to the time the kids would be away so I could spend some time with my new found friend.

Days passed and I learned to maneuver the little man better. I had actually passed three stages.  I was getting a lot of practice when the kids were tucked snugly in bed.
I have a brand new friend now.  Outdoor activity, eye strain…well, I'm sure the computer screen is not as bad as they make it out to be!

Mario, how fun! Don't know what kind of screen you're using, but I hear a flat screen is much easier on the eyes. Worth the investment. Enjoy...
